A slower Croatia journey shaped by food, wine, and places with character
This journey is a different way into Croatia. Rather than moving quickly through the standard highlights, it takes a more settled route through Zagreb, Rovinj, inland Istria, Brijuni, Pula, and Plitvice Lakes. This region offers remarkable variety within a relatively small area, combining rolling hills, truffle-rich forests, wineries, historic sites, olive oil producers, and the coast.
It works especially well for travellers who enjoy wine, good food, and a journey with atmosphere and a calmer overall pace. Croatia is a well-known wine-producing country, and Istria is one of its four most rewarding regions to explore.
The balance is what makes it strong. Zagreb gives the trip a city beginning, Rovinj and Istria bring coastal beauty and food-led days, and Plitvice adds one of Croatia's most striking landscapes before returning to the capital.
Zagreb opens the journey with its Upper Town, markets, and local city rhythm. Rovinj brings a softer coastal note, with old stone streets, sea views, and a very different atmosphere from the capital. Inland Istria shifts the pace through hill towns such as Grožnjan, Oprtalj, and Motovun, where wine, truffles, olive groves, and countryside views shape the day naturally.
Brijuni adds a quieter island escape with a very different feel, while Pula brings Roman history. Plitvice Lakes changes the mood once more, with waterfalls, forest paths, and one of Croatia's best-known natural settings.
